The news coming from all wine regions throughout France is consistent...the 2026 vintage is set to be the earliest ever on record, even eclipsing the extraordinary 2003 vintage. Winemakers a nearly unanimously reporting that they commenced picking grapes this summer at least a month - and in some cases nearly eight weeks - earlier than usual. Many growers have not only already completed harvest when they would typically still be on their summer holidays, but in some regions the wines are already nearing completion of fermentations...all whilst those grapes should still be sitting on the vines maturing and developing further flavours prior to harvest.
This is no surprise, given Europe's extraordinary summer heat conditions, where France has endured no less than 63 days of heat wave conditions across four distinct extreme heat events. Paris set (and then broke) its highest-ever temperature record on three consecutive days, and many cities and regions throughout the country broke their own heat records. Coupled with this heat, rainfall has been far lower than usual, leading to drought conditions in many regions. And the regulations governing many of the most prestigious regions explicitly prohibit irrigation of the vines, resulting in hydrological stress in many vineyards.
So what should we expect from the wines in vintage 2026? Well, previous recent extreme heat vintages would suggest that many, if not most, wines will be very ripe, rich, almost stewed in character. Low acidity, poor ageing potential, and broadly speaking, a lesser vintage. However over the past two decades winemakers have learnt to adapt to the changing conditions due to climate change, and as a result, they have far greater awareness of how to handle the grapes in order to preserve acidity, retain freshness, and avoid (as far as possible) the desiccated, raisened characters that were previously ubiquitous in such wines.
Monumental wines that are nothing short of extraordinary are possible in extreme heat vintages, indeed some of the most legendary wines ever made are a result of such years. Think 1947 Cheval Blanc, or 2003 Latour, or even 2003 Montrose. Whilst these wines were the very rare exceptions in years gone by, winelovers should retain high hopes that some phenomenal wines may yet emerge from the difficulties posed by vintage 2006.
