1962 Penfolds Grange Hermitage
Bottled as Bin 95. A blend of 87% Shiraz and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced primarily from the Magill Estate (in Adelaide), Kalimna Vineyard (in the Barossa Valley) and the Adelaide Hills.
Powerful, bright, lifted aromas of coffee, undergrowth, dark berries, liquorice, spice, minerals and ripe plum. The wine is fully-mature on the palate, showing mostly tertiary flavours, still some rich, stewed plum and cranberry notes alongside plenty of undergrowth, coffee bean and a touch of formic acid. Very good vitality, with fine, persistent tannins providing a long finish that has layers of complexity that fan out and broaden after swallowing. Really quite exceptional for its age. 93 points, drink now to 2030. (June 2017).
