1989 Penfolds Grange Hermitage
A blend of 91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. Considered by some to be a 'lesser' vintage of Grange upon release, and the last vintage to sport the full moniker 'Grange Hermitage', the 1989 Grange has unquestionably defied its early critics. Extreme heat and the heavy rains in March followed an otherwise ideal growing season, resulting in a wine that has less concentration and intensity, and potentially reduced longevity to that of most great vintages of Grange, yet this wine more than compensates with its charm and attractiveness.
The wine is drinking beautifully now, with plenty of red berry, musk, and liquorice aromas, with some herbal notes. On the palate the wine has plenty of attractive plum, pastille, blackcurrant and herbal notes, along with some mineral, spice and liquorice flavours. Quite powerful, dry tannins and very good length of finish. A lovely, interesting wine that just lacks the 'wow' of the best vintages. 92 points, drink now to 2030 (August 2018).
