1996 Penfolds 'Kalimna' Block 42
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the legendary Block 42 within Penfolds' revered Kalimna vineyard - considered to be the world's oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines (planted around 1886). This is only the fifth bottling (after variously-labelling bottlings in 1948, 1953, 1963 and 1964).
Slightly subdued aromas that with plenty of coaxing, open up and reveal beautiful blackcurrant, plum, dried herb, minerals and crushed rocks. Beautiful and impeccably refined on the palate, the wine has gentle, elegant layers of blackcurrant, plum, olive and raspberry flavour, ultra-fine tannins and gentle, fresh acidity that combine to give the wine the most silken, elegant and lengthy finish imagineable. Builds further on the back palate, just a beautiful wine! 96+ points, drink now to 2046. (June 2017).
