1998 Penfolds Grange

The 1998 vintage was an exceptional one, and the only regret chief winemaker Peter Gago has is that they didn't produce and of their legendary 'special bin' bottlings that vintage. The reason for this was not that the fruit was not of the requisite standard, but in fact the opposite - there was too much great fruit!
The occasional 'special bin' bottlings are produced when there's something unique and extraordinary in a particular parcel of fruit. Because 1998 was such a consistent vintage, nothing really stood out as being significantly better or different to the usual and other parcels of fruit. So the standard of the top bottles - being Grange, Bin 707, RWT and St Henri - was so high that it could not really be envisaged how there was an opportunity for the production of distinctive 'special bin' bottlings that would tell a different story.
