From Alban Vineyards in California’s cool, coastal Edna Valley, the 2013 'Reva' is a profound expression of Syrah with both richness and remarkable savoury complexity. Alban was one of the pioneering producers of California’s Rhône movement, and Reva takes its name from a ridge on the estate, where sandy and chalky, alkaline soils contribute to its distinctive character. This syrah occupies a compelling space between New World richness and Old World savouriness, combining ripe Californian fruit with the peppery, earthy and mineral complexity associated with classic Rhône Syrah. Deeply coloured and full-bodied, the wine offers layers of blackberry, cassis and blueberry alongside violets, liquorice, fennel, smoked meat and an intriguing iodine and oyster-shell note. Silky, generous and beautifully concentrated, it is supported by fresh acidity and polished tannins, with spice and mineral tones emerging through an exceptionally long finish. After more than a decade in bottle, the 2013 is entering a lovely stage of maturity, while retaining the power and freshness for which Alban is renowned.
