2019 Chateau Calon-Segur
Calon Segur offer first-growth quality at third-growth prices.
This astonishing wine is a textbook example of power and finesse existing side-by-side, helped along by the incredible 2019 vintage.
Estate director Vincent Millet has taken a shine to close-planted vineyards, with a project underway to get the estate up to 10,000 vines per hectare. Now if you're not so technically minded, this translates to less fruit per vine (more vines competing for the same amount of nutrients in the soil), which translates to higher concentration of sugars and flavour compounds in each grape, which in turn translates to extreme concentration of flavour in the finished product.
Expect notes of blackcurrant, cassis and a hint of tobacco. Classic Bordeaux.
The blend in 2019 was 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
This is a wine that will show you a great time if you open it now, but it will last a long time in the cellar. In fact, I might grab one for my own fridge.
