Chateau de Beaucastel is one of the true standard bearers for Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Drawing up more than 60 hectares of vines in this appellation alone, the blend is typically around one-third Grenache, one-third Mourvedre, 10% each of Syrah and Counoise, 5% Cinsualt and the balance all other permitted varieties (red and white). The grapes are entirely de-stemmed, and elevage is shorter than most, between 12 and 18 months in large old oak foudres.
