From Rhys Vineyards in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2019 Horseshoe Hillside is a beautifully site-driven expression of American Pinot Noir. Sourced from the steepest, lowest-yielding parcels of Horseshoe Vineyard, planted on ancient Monterey shale, it combines natural power with remarkable finesse. Aromas of dark cherry, red plum, rose petal and subtle spice lead into a concentrated yet vibrant palate, with savoury earth, mineral and blood-orange notes adding complexity. Fine-grained tannins and bright acidity provide excellent structure and length, while the fruit remains remarkably pure and precise. Still youthful, the 2019 has plenty of depth to unfold with time in the glass and further bottle age. A compelling example of the cool-climate, mountain-grown Pinot Noir that has made the Santa Cruz Mountains one of California’s most exciting regions.
