Monvigliero is sometimes referred to as the "Grand Cru" of the Barolo township of Verduno and G.B. Burlotto have a little over two hectares of it to play with. The wines produce an extreme elegance year after year and are the true benchmark for quality Barolo.
The grapes are hand-harvested and transported back to the winery in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. They are whole-bunch fermented in French oak with a length maceration before being transferred to the very traditional large-format Slovenian oak barrels that traditional Barolo producers used. The wine will remain here for around three years before spending two more years in bottle before release.
The 2021 vintage was one for the ages, with snowfall providing beneficial water to the sandy slopes protecting the grapes from a dry growing season, producing healthy grapes with concentrated tannins and phenolic compounds. In short, that makes wines that are extremely long-lived.
The Cru Barolos (those from a specific Barolo sub-region) were not produced by Burlotto in the much warmer 2022 with all of the fruit being thrown into one single bottling, so this is the only one you will see for a while!
