The idea of single-vineyard Barolos is a relatively new one. The tradition is to take fruit from all over the region and produce one regional powerhouse. Many argue that is still the true heart of Barolo, and it has the added bonus of also (usually) being the most affordable.

Enter Chiara Boschis' Via Nuova - named for a former cru vineyard that stands on what was once a road connecting the towns of Barolo and Novello. Now a dusty path winding through the grapes is all that remains of the road, but the vines still exist.

While the Boschis 'Via Nuova' was a single-vineyard wine, the vineyard was declassified from MGA status (the local term for "cru", or a single vineyard with a history of exceptional fruit production) in 2010 and since then Chiara Boschis and co have decided to continue using the name for her blended Barolo. This wine also takes fruit from the exceptional crus of Liste, Terlo, Gabutti, Baudana, RAvera di Monforte and Mosconi.

This wine is intensely floral and while the tannins are powerful, they are softer than the others in the set. Like all Chiara Boschis Barolos, this will benefit from a long rest in a cellar, so if you're looking to build your collection, grab it while you can.
