2022 was a hot, dry year in Tuscany so Tignanello fans seeking out those hedonistic, richer, riper and fuller bodied years should be flocking to this one.
One of the original Super Tuscans, Tignanello is predominantly Sangiovese, with the rest being made up of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon.
The pioneering wine was one of the (although not quite THE) first to use French grapes Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc - at the time not allowed in the popular Chianti designation. After one release under Chianti DOC in 1970, Piero Antinori declassified the wine to Toscana Rosso in 1971 and sold it under Toscana Rosso - the same designation as the bulk wine produced in the backyards of Tuscany.
Fast forward to this day and the wine has become a symbol of rebellion and pioneering spirit, in part because of its two middle fingers to the established norm, and in part because beyond all the hubbub, it's a bloody good wine.
This wine will improve over many, many years. Whether you crack it tonight or in a decade, make sure you have it with a great steak and roast veggies.
