In the Northern Rhône, Syrah (or as we in Australia call it - Shiraz) reigns supreme.  Located due south of France's gastronic capital in Lyon, within this region you'll find appellations like Cornas and St.-Joseph (100% Syrah), Côte Rôtie (Syrah, often with a splash of Viogner), Hermitage (Syrah, occasionally with a splash of Marsanne and Roussanne) and more.  Steep hillside vineyards are typical, especially in Côte Rôtie and of course the famous hill of Hermitage.
